Popunder vs. Interstitial: Which Converts Better for Your Vertical

Popunder and Interstitial both give an offer the full screen, which makes them easy to lump together when picking a format. The difference that actually matters is when each one claims that attention — and that timing difference is what should drive the choice.

The core difference is timing, not size

A Popunder opens behind the page the visitor is already on — it doesn’t interrupt the current session, it waits for the visitor to finish and close the front window. An Interstitial fires immediately, at a specific transition point (between pages, after an action, on app open). One asks for attention later; the other asks for it right now.

When Popunder tends to fit better

  • Offers that need a full landing page to make their case — VPNs, antivirus, subscription software. The visitor arrives with no immediate task interrupted, which gives the offer room to actually pitch instead of racing a countdown.
  • Volume-driven testing — because it doesn’t block the current page, Popunder inventory tends to run at higher volume, useful when you’re still validating a new offer or GEO on CPM.
  • iGaming and sports — a strong landing page paired with the full-page format works well for time-sensitive betting and casino offers that benefit from a hard call to action.

When Interstitial tends to fit better

  • Natural break points — between game levels, after a form submission, on session start. The interruption reads as expected rather than intrusive because it lands where the visitor’s own flow already paused.
  • Time-sensitive or high-urgency offers — a seasonal promo or limited-time deal benefits from immediate, full-attention placement rather than waiting for the visitor to finish what they were doing.
  • Apps and games — Interstitial is the native pattern most mobile users already expect inside app and game sessions, which keeps it from feeling out of place.

A rule of thumb

If the offer needs the visitor’s undivided attention right now to work (urgency, a game-session break), use Interstitial. If the offer benefits from a full, unhurried landing page and can wait until the visitor’s current task is done, use Popunder. Both run on CPM or CPA pricing, so the pricing decision doesn’t have to drive the format choice — the conversion flow should.
